2009 Buick Lucerne Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the right side exhaust manifold (LZ9 or LGD) (3.9L) on 2009 Buick Lucerne?
A: The replacement process of the right side Exhaust Manifold (LZ9 or LGD) (3.9L) begins by removing the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer followed by disconnecting the heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector. The next step involves removing the ho2s clip which should come off the ignition coil bracket but protect the pigtail and connector that remain permanently attached. Begin the replacement procedure by using the j 39194-b - heated Oxygen Sensor wrench to remove the ho2s and then continue by removing the Exhaust Manifold shield bolts followed by the shield. The technician should begin by removing all heat shield bolts from the exhaust crossover pipe before proceeding to remove the heat shield itself. The next step involves removing the exhaust crossover pipe nuts which attach it to the right Exhaust Manifold. The first step includes removing upper Exhaust Manifold bolts followed by removing the Catalytic Converter before performing lower Exhaust Manifold bolt removal. Take the Exhaust Manifold from the vehicle bottom before disposing of the Exhaust Manifold Gasket. To install the Exhaust Manifold position an updated gasket onto the cylinder head studs before mounting the Exhaust Manifold. Reinstall the Catalytic Converter after you tighten both lower Exhaust Manifold bolts to 20 nm (15 lb ft). Put the vehicle in its lower position while torquing the upper Exhaust Manifold bolts to 20 nm (15 lb ft). The exhaust crossover pipe needs to be mounted to the right Exhaust Manifold nuts before installing the heat shield along with its corresponding bolts. Fit the Exhaust Manifold shield and secure its bolts to 10 nm torque specification (89 lb in). To tighten the Oxygen Sensor use the j 39194-b - heated Oxygen Sensor wrench but first apply a coat of nickel-based anti-seize compound gm p/n 5613695 (or equivalent) to its threads. Torque it to 42 nm (31 lb ft). Hook up the ho2s electrical connector and place the cpa retainer while using the ignition coil bracket to fasten the ho2s clip. The Power Steering Reservoir needs installation as the last step.
