2008 Buick Lucerne Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the right side exhaust manifold (RPO L26/3.8L) on 2008 Buick Lucerne?
A: The procedure to replace the right side Exhaust Manifold (RPO L26/3.8L) starts with removing the intake manifold cover and right side spark plugs and secondary air injection components if present. The first step requires removal of the secondary air injection (AIR) shutoff and check valve alongside engine harness electrical connector separation from the heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S). The ho2s pigtail clip should be taken off first along with removing the ho2s from the Exhaust Manifold. Move the power brake booster heat shield and its installed nuts before you separate the heat shield from the system. First extract the studs used for exhaust crossover-to-right Exhaust Manifold attachment and afterward remove the transaxle fill tube and the Catalytic Converter. You should first remove the sight shield bracket nuts and bracket then proceed to take off the right engine lift bracket bolt and nut followed by removal of the engine lift bracket itself. You must remove the Exhaust Manifold heat shield bolts and shield as well as unscrew the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve adapter pipe bolt and finally remove the Exhaust Manifold with its gasket along with the exhaust crossover pipe seal. Begin engine installation by applying an exhaust crossover pipe seal and an Exhaust Manifold Gasket on the Exhaust Manifold before proceeding with the installation. The installation requires Exhaust Manifold studs to reach a torque of 30 n.m (22 lb ft) while nuts require 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Secure the egr valve adapter pipe bolt by torquing it to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Seal the Exhaust Manifold heat shield by tightening its bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in) torque value. The engine lift bracket should be reinstalled and the right engine lift bracket bolt and nut should be tightened to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Fasten the sight shield bracket using nuts that need a torque of 30 n.m (22 lb ft). After putting back the Catalytic Converter and transaxle fill tube, torque the exhaust crossover studs to right Exhaust Manifold to 18 n.m (13 lb ft). Place the power brake booster heat shield back in position before torquing all nuts to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). Install the ho2s only after treating its threads with anti-seize compound gm p/n 12377953 or equivalent product and then tighten it to 42 n.m (31 lb ft). If ho2s requires retention connect its engine harness electrical connector and fasten the ho2s pigtail clip and reinstall the air shutoff and check valve when present. The right side spark plugs receive installation before the intake manifold cover can be placed in position.
