2008 GMC Yukon Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft in RPOs LC9/LMG/LY2/LY5 (4.8L and 5.3L) on 2008 GMC Yukon?
A: Beginning a Camshaft replacement for rpos lc9/lmg/ly2/ly5 (4.8L and 5.3L) requires removal of the radiator support followed by removal of valve lifters alongside their replacement before proceeding. You must detach both the Starter motor and the engine front cover. Apply the j 42386-a (Flywheel Holding Tool) along with two m10-1.5 x 120 mm and m10-1.5 x 45 mm bolts while applying torque reaching 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Follow this step by carefully rotating the crankshaft sprocket to line up its alignment marks with the one on the Camshaft sprocket before you remove the Timing Chain since any movement of the crankshaft system must be prevented. The procedure requires removing bolt 206 from the Camshaft sprocket followed by removing components 205 and 208 then proceeding with bolts 204 and retainer 203. Take special caution when handling the Camshaft to protect the Camshaft bearings from harm. Apply clean oil to both bearing surfaces of the Camshaft before putting it into the engine block through the use of the Camshaft sprocket bolt as an installation tool. The first clean the gasket surface of the engine block before installing the Camshaft retainer (203) along with its bolts (204). Use 11 lb ft of torque for the torx(R) head bolts and 18 lb ft for first design hex head bolts during installation. Install the en 46330 (Timing Belt Tensioner Retaining Pin) by compressing the Timing Chain tensioner guide and properly position the Camshaft sprocket with the timing mark facing the 6 o'clock setting. Place the Camshaft sprocket (205), timing chain (208) and bolt (206) while inspecting the sprocket alignment. Use the en 46330 to remove the sprocket bolt retainer after which apply 90 n.m (66 lb ft) torque then proceed with an additional 40-degree torque rotation using j 45059 (Angle Meter). Reinstall the Starter motor after removing the j 42386-a (Flywheel Holding Tool) and bolts and then install the engine front cover and valve lifters and wind up with the radiator support.
