2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Upper Steering Column Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Upper Steering Column Bearing on 2008 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: Steering shaft upper bearing replacement starts with Steering Column removal. First, remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil from the assembly followed by the turn signal multifunction switch and the ignition lock cylinder case. First remove the tilt spring along with the automatic transmission control. By using the compressor (J 23653-SIR) together with adapter (J 42137) extract the Steering Shaft lock plate retaining ring which needs disposal. Separate the Steering Column shaft assembly by removing these components: turn signal switch cancel cam position plate , turn signal switch cancel cam , steering shaft upper bearing spring , steering shaft upper bearing inner race seat , and Steering Shaft upper bearing inner race . Use the pivot pin remover (J 21854-01) to remove two pivot pins found in the Steering Column tilt head assembly. The tilt lever goes into the Steering Column tilt head assembly as you pull the tilt lever back then lower and remove the Steering Column tilt head assembly from the Steering Column. Pull out both components of the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) and tilt lever followed by removal of the Steering Shaft upper bearing from the Steering Column tilt head assembly. First install the Steering Shaft upper bearing inside the Steering Column tilt head assembly followed by installation of the Steering Column shaft assembly. Lowly thrust the Steering Column tilt head assembly against the Steering Column to activate steering wheel lock shoes. Each pivot pin must receive gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) lubrication before the Steering Column tilt head assembly receives both pivot pins which should be firmly positioned and staked in three points surrounding each pivot pin. Place the anti-rotation pin (J 42640) with these accompanying parts onto the Steering Column shaft assembly: apply gm p/n12345718 lubricant (Canadian P/N 10953516) to the inner race of the Steering Shaft upper bearing before installation of the inner race seat and spring. Install the Turn Signal Switch cancel cam and its position plate after applying gm p/n 12377900 (Canadian P/N 10953529) lubrication. Use the compressor (J 23653-SIR) with adapter (J 42137) to install the new Steering Shaft lock plate retaining ring onto the Steering Shaft before installing other components such as automatic transmission control assembly and tilt spring and ignition lock cylinder case and turn signal multifunction switch and inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil and Steering Column.
