2008 Chevrolet HHR Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What tools are required to replace the water pump (LNF) and what are the steps involved in the process on 2008 Chevrolet HHR?
A: To replace the Water Pump (LNF), the following tools are required: Water Pump holding tool (J 43651). Start the process by removing the air cleaner assembly together with the Thermostat Housing. Begin by removing the Water Pump access plate located on the front cover. Remove coolant from the Water Pump by using the drain plug positioned at its bottom. The Water Pump holding tool (J 43651) helps maintain sprocket and chain alignment while servicing the balance shaft. Drive bolts from the holding tool through the Water Pump sprocket threads then connect the tool to the front cover assembly using access cover bolts. First remove three bolt connecting the inner pump sprocket to the Water Pump and then take out two more bolts that secure the Water Pump before removing both rear Water Pump bolts to extract the Water Pump for o-ring seal disposal. The installation requires a brand new Water Pump o-ring seal and an m6 m x 6 mm stud guide pin assembly for proper alignment. Install the guiding pin onto the Water Pump holding tool before placing the Water Pump against the engine block while hand-tightening the Water Pump bolts. After installing the inner Water Pump sprocket bolts apply light torque to two bolts before taking out the guide pin to complete installation with the remaining bolt tightened to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Tighten the Water Pump sprocket bolts to 10 n.m (89 lb in) after removing the Water Pump holding tool (J 43651) then reinstall the Water Pump access plate and bolts secured at 10 n.m (89 lb in). Finish the installation by attaching both the Thermostat Housing and the air cleaner assembly.
