2008 Chevrolet Equinox Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle on 2008 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: A replacement Steering Knuckle procedure starts by supporting the vehicle while it is raised then moving on to tire and wheel removal. You should begin by removing the wheel bearing/hub assembly. Take care that the stabilizer link ball stud stays stationary when you remove the link nut before you remove the stabilizer link from the strut assembly. First loosen the Steering Knuckle to strut bolts and nuts before discarding the lower Ball Joint cotter pin while also setting the ball stud nut at the same height as the ball stud top. Insert the j-42188-b Ball Joint separator into the lower Ball Joint-Steering Knuckle connection to disconnect them before you remove the lower Ball Joint nut. Avoid using a pickle fork or wedge-type tool to break free the ball stud to preserve the seal and bushing. Drive out the tie rod from the knuckle followed by installing the Steering Knuckle to strut bolts and nuts and removing the knuckle from the vehicle chassis. Attachment of the Steering Knuckle to the strut assembly includes preliminary bolt and nut tightening on the strut to Steering Knuckle components. Put the lower Ball Joint stud into the Steering Knuckle then begin threading and tighten the ball stud nut to 40 n.m (30 lb ft). Steer the bolts and nuts of the strut to Steering Knuckle until torque reaches 180 n.m (133 lb ft) while avoiding loosening the castle nut for installing the cotter pin. Widen the castle nut until you can install the new cotter pin but avoid letting it touch either the drive axle or Wheel Speed Sensor unit. After tightening the nut for the cotter pin, put a new pin into place. Install the outer Tie Rod End to its position on the knuckle but avoid let the stabilizer link ball stud rotate during link nut installation. Attach the stabilizer shaft link to the strut assembly before torquing the nut to 65 n.m (48 lb ft). First install the new wheel bearing/hub assembly before adding the tire and wheel to the vehicle then lower it and have a wheel alignment completed.
