2008 Chevrolet Colorado Pinion Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: What tools are required to replace the drive pinion bearings on an 8.6 inch axle on 2008 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: To replace the drive pinion bearings on an 8.6 inch axle, the following tools are required: j 8092 driver handle (J 8092), j 8608 rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8608), j 8611-01 rear Pinion Bearing race installer (J 8611-01), j 8614-01 flange and pulley holding tool (J 8614-01), j 22388 rear axle pinion oil seal installer (J 22388), j 22912-b split plate bearing puller (J 22912-B), j 24433 pinion cone and side bearing installer (J 24433), and j 45871 Pinion Bearing remover (J 45871), and j 45900 Pinion Bearing cup installer (J 45900). The first step includes lifting up the vehicle then taking out the Differential assembly and drive pinion from the axle. The procedure for 8.6 inch axle removal requires users to fit j 45871 penetrating the Pinion Bearing and j 22912-b in reverse position enveloping j 45871, followed by bearing extraction using both tools. Use a hammer and brass drift to take away the shim along with the outer and inner Pinion Bearing cups from the axle housing. The installation process for the outer Pinion Bearing cup requires j 8611-01 and j 8092 tool while the installation process for the inner Pinion Bearing cup needs j 45900 with j 8092 tool. Set the shim thickness needed for the pinion before placing it between the shoulder on the gear and the inner Pinion Bearing. Install the inner Pinion Bearing through j 24433 tool while making sure it contacts the pinion shim before installing a fresh collapsible spacer. The appropriate axle lubricant should be used for Pinion Bearing lubrication then the outer Pinion Bearing can be installed inside the axle housing. The technician uses the j 22388 to put in a new pinion oil seal and fits the pinion into the axle housing. Before installation they must apply sealant to the splined area of the pinion yoke and align it based on the marks they made during the removal process. Use a soft-faced hammer to gently tap the pinion yoke onto its place on the pinion shaft and apply washer and new pinion nut. The j 8614-01 tool enables pinion yoke retention while tightening the pinion nut because the tool assists in reaching the correct pinion end play then lets you rotate the pinion while tightening to settle the bearings. Test the pinion rotating torque through an inch-pound torque wrench to check used or new bearing parameters before making any final adjustments. Place the Differential assembly back into position after you fill the axle with appropriate lubricating fluid. Finally lower the vehicle.
