• Q: How to Replace a CV Boot and CV Joint on a Wheel Drive Shaft for Outer on 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt?

  A: Before servicing and repairing the constant velocity joint boot you need the following tools: drive axle seal clamp pliers, (J 35910). Clamp the drive Axle Shaft into a soft jawed vice, then what we can do is we can use a flat bladed tool to dis-engage the retaining tabs of the large seal clamp and discard it. Cut off the small seal clamp along with side cutters and also discard it. Dislodge the constant velocity (CV) joint boot from the cv joint race at the diameter and move the boot along the wheel drive shaft bar. Wipe out grease excess from the face of the cv inner race and place a block of wood alongside the cv outside wheel race and tap gently until the joint is detached from the wheel drive shaft bar. Pull out both the seal and the cv joint retaining ring from the wheel drive shaft bar. Use the brass drift to tilt the vth cv for joint's inner race and pry off the first roller; repeat this process for all 6 roller bearings of the cv joint. Pivot the cv joint cage and inner race about 90deg to align the cage windows with the lands on the outer race, then lift out cage and inner race. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, cv joint cage, and bearing rollers using an appropriate solvent and dry out using compressed air, inspect and replace any damaged parts in case of unusual wear, cracks, or breakdown. Use a wire brush to clean the rust in the seal mounting grooves of the wheel drive shaft bar. And for installation, the outboard seal will install its new small seal clamp on the neck outboard seal without clamping it, slide it outboard seal onto the wheel drive shaft bar making sure that it is properly placed in the seal groove. Crimp the seal clamp with the drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) and measure the clamp end gap making sure that it does not exceed 2.15mm (0.85 in). Apply a light coat of grease from the service kit on the bearing roller grooves on the inner races and the outer rz, and then hold the inner race 90 degrees to the cage and insert. Align the cage, the inner race, and the outer one with the wheel drive shaft bar, and put them into the outer race; retaining ring side of the inner race facing the wheel drive shaft bar must be aligned. Install the first bearing roller, tilting the cage and inserting the every other roller until the six rollers are in. Mount the cv joint retaining ring to the wheel drive shaft bar and pack the cv joint with grease once again, finally bringing the inner race and the retaining ring together by tapping with a block of wood. Instead move the large diameter seal over the cv race to install the large seal retaining clamp tightening it with the drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) till the gap dimension is 1.9 mm (5/64 in). Lastly, take the wheel drive shaft out of the bench vise and spread the grease in the outer cv joint by rotating it in a circular motion 4 to 5 times.
