How to replace the rear axle shaft on 8.6 and 9.5/9.5LD inch axles on 2007 GMC Sierra 1500?

The replacement procedure for 8.6 and 9.5/9.5ld inch axles starts by raising and supporting the vehicle which is followed by tire and wheel removal and brake caliper extraction. Start by removing the rear cover together with its gasket and subsequently take out the pinion shaft locking bolt. Users must remove the pinion shaft from axles without locking differentials while those with locking differentials should withdraw the shaft partially before rotating the case for the pinion shaft to touch its housing. A screwdriver or equivalent tool helps rotate the lock until it lines up with the thrust block , then push the Axle Shaft flange toward the Differential and pull out the c-lock from the Axle Shaft button end. The gears should stay properly aligned which requires not turning the Axle Shaft during the removal process. Insert the new Axle Shaft into the rear axle housing with great caution by doing splines alignment to the Differential side gear. Axles without locking differentials require positioning the lock onto the button end while axles with locking differentials should keep the pinion shaft partially extended with the c-lock placed on the Axle Shaft end to match the thrust block. After positioning the lock inside Differential gear through shaft flange extension users should place the pinion shaft hole at the Differential case bolt location. The new pinion shaft locking bolt needs installation with a torque specification of 36 n.m (27 lb ft) for 8.6 inch axles or 50 n.m (37 lb ft) for 9.5/9.6ld inch axles. Once the tire and wheel assembly are in position with the brake caliper and rear cover along with its gasket reattached the proper fluid should be poured into the rear axle before lowering the vehicle.

Axles without locking differentials require positioning the lock onto the button end while axles with locking differentials should keep the pinion shaft partially extended with the c-lock placed on the Axle Shaft end to match the thrust block. After positioning the lock inside Differential gear through shaft flange extension users should place the pinion shaft hole at the Differential case bolt location. The new pinion shaft locking bolt needs installation with a torque specification of 36 n.m (27 lb ft) for 8.6 inch axles or 50 n.m (37 lb ft) for 9.5/9.6ld inch axles. Once the tire and wheel assembly are in position with the brake caliper and rear cover along with its gasket reattached the proper fluid should be poured into the rear axle before lowering the vehicle.
