2006 Chevrolet Equinox Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2006 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: The replacement process for the transaxle range switch begins by removing the battery tray. The transaxle manual shaft requires a neutral (N) position which can be achieved through engaging the parking brake along with placing the control shift lever in neutral (N). Disassemble by first removing the transaxle range switch lever and then disconnecting electrical connectors (3, 5) from the transaxle range switch. Bend the lockwasher tabs down using a screwdriver so they move away from the manual shaft nut before you remove the nut and all the washers. The installation sequence begins by taking out the transaxle range switch bolt together with its stud and flat washers prior to extracting the transaxle range switch itself. Start the installation by mounting the transaxle range switch to the manual shaft lever but limit the tightening effort to hand torque only. Fasten the flat washer and lock tab washer beneath the nut before tightening the nut to reach 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.). Bend the lock washer tabs while ensuring the manual shaft remains in neutral mode (N). Afterwards secure the nut by bending the lock washer tabs. Mount the J 45404 Transmission Indicator Alignment Tool (J 45404) onto the manual shaft to rotate the transaxle range switch until its neutral base line matches the indicator line on the tool. Tighten the transaxle range switch bolt and stud to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)Next step, you should take the J 45404 Transmission Indicator Alignment Tool off the manual shaft. Attach electrical connectors (3, 5) to the transaxle range switch before installing the transaxle range switch lever and battery tray. After completing the installation and adjustment, verify that the engine starts only in park (P) or neutral (N); Adjust the switch if the engine begins to start from positions other than park (P) or neutral (N).
