  • Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on 2005 GMC Canyon?
    A: Start the universal joint replacement by gathering two specific tools: U-Joint Bearing Separator (J 9522-3) and U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5). Place the propeller shaft in level position when supporting it without using clamps to protect the tubing from damage. Use a marker to indicate where both ends of the propeller shaft will be reassembled. Use pliers to compress both ends of the snap rings before tapping the end cup gently if necessary. Hold the lower yoke ear over a 30 mm (1-1/8 inch) hex socket and press the bearings out using the U-Joint Bearing Separator J 9522-3. When the bearing cup stays put use the U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J 9522-5) as an insertion tool between seal and cup to extract it. When rotating the shaft we push the second bearing cup out to note its alignment to the tube. Check both sides of the cross for retained universal parts and examine the bearing cup bores in their grooves for any imperfections or damage. Insert one cup in the yoke side and push the cross through its opening before pressing the cup until it reaches the yoke surface. Insert the opposite bearing cup halfway into the yoke so trunnions line up correctly before pressing it against the yoke shell to test its movement. Examine needle bearings because they may be the source of binding. Push slowly until you see the retainer groove show and then insert the bearing retainer before pressing until both parts snap into position. When needed strike the yoke lightly with a dead blow hammer to increase retainer insertion and apply chassis grease to the snap ring if installation requires force.
