2005 Chevrolet SSR Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2005 Chevrolet SSR?
A: Begin replacing automatic transmission fluid and filter by securely lifting the vehicle then placing a drain pan under the transmission Oil Pan. If equipped with an Oil Pan Drain Plug you should remove that plug first then take the necessary steps to free up space by removing bolts securing the range selector cable bracket before using a drain pan to lower the pan without disconnecting the cable. Use a rubber mallet to drain fluid by tapping the Oil Pan while applying 4 turns of looseness to the rear bolts. Remove Oil Pan bolts from the front and side only. Drain completion allows the removal of remaining Oil Pan bolts before taking off both the pan and its gasket. Start by firmly clutching the filter until you can pull it down with a twisting motion before extracting the filter seal using pliers since it may be difficult to remove. The inspection process requires removal of the seal to examine fluid color while checking the filter for transmission material and examining it for bronze slivers and steel particles. Soak both the transmission case and Oil Pan gasket surfaces with solvent before removing all remaining old gasket material. Automatic transmission fluid must coat the new filter seal before installing it into the transmission case through the usage of a suitable socket to secure correct seating. Install the Oil Pan with a new gasket by tightening the transmitting case bolts gradually to 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) alternately. You should reinstall the range selector cable bracket but ensure to tighten its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). A tiny amount of gm p/n 12346004 sealant should be applied to the Oil Pan Drain Plug threads when present before installing the plug and tightening it to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle then fill the transmission properly with dexron(r) iii transmission fluid while checking only the initial cold fluid level during the first fill-up and inspect the Oil Pan gasket for possible leaks.
