2005 Buick Century Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the alternator on 2005 Buick Century?
A: The replacement process begins with negative Battery Cable disconnect followed by Drive Belt removal from the generator. You must move the coolant recovery reservoir out of the way for better access before you remove the generator rear brace nut and its bolts (1, 2, 3). Detach the electrical connector and pull off the protective boot covering the generator output bat terminal then disconnect the generator output bat terminal nut to free the positive battery lead. Move the generator out of its installed location. Position the generator to the engine then connect the positive battery lead before tightening the generator output bat terminal nut to 20 n.m (15 lb ft). After installing the generator output bat terminal nut and protective boot you should connect the electrical connector. First install the generator bolts (2, 3) until they reach position without full torque then install and loosely tighten the generator pivot bolt. Apply torque to generator bolts according to this required sequence: generator pivot bolt to 50 n.m (37 lb ft), generator bolt to 50 n.m (37 lb ft), and generator bolt to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). Begin the generator pivot bolt torque at 50 n.m before moving to the generator bolts at 50 n.m and finally the generator bolt at 50 n.m. After installing the generator rear brace nut tighten it to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) before reinstalling the coolant recovery reservoir and Drive Belt and reconnecting the negative Battery Cable.
