2004 Cadillac XLR Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front brake pads on 2004 Cadillac XLR?
A: Check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder before starting work. If the fluid is at the center between maximum and minimum lines, no fluid needs to be drained but excess should be reduced to the center if fluid is above the mid-point. When raising the vehicle lift up the tire and wheel assembly before removing it. Apply your hands to thread a wheel lug nut to lock the rotor onto the hub. Insert the old inner Brake Pad or wood block against the caliper pistons under large c-clamp pressure until the pistons push through the brake rotor. Use mechanic's wire to prevent damage to the brake hose as you unplug the upper bracket and take out the guide pin bolt of the caliper portion. Lower the caliper onto its mounts without distorting the hose before checking pad retainers and brake pads when they are removed. When the slides show signs of damage replace them right away. Install the large c-clamp again to push brake pistons all the way home. Remove both the pad and clamp from their positions. Fit Brake Pad retainers and new pads on the rotor. Position the Brake Pad wear sensor towards the rear when you rotate the brake rotor in forward motion. Push the brake caliper up into the holder space before adding the upper guide pin bolt. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 31 nm (23 ft. Lbs.). Put on the tire and wheel assembly while lowering the vehicle and utilize the brake pedal without power to activate it halfway then release slowly. Release the brake pedal for 15 seconds and do this test until the brake pedal feels solid. This action positions both caliper pistons and brake pads correctly. End the process by filling the brake reservoir until it reaches the correct level and running the system to smooth out the brake pads and rotors.
