  A: In order to replace the valve lifters, first remove the Cylinder Head and gasket and then the valve lifter guide bolts. Then get out the valve lifters and guide, although, some of them might be stuck because of the gum or varnish deposits. If necessary, use the valve lifter remover (J 3049-A) to help remove the valve lifters. Once you remove the lifters from guide, sort or label the components for correct reassemble. Clean and inspect the valve lifters before installation. If reusing valve lifters, they are placed on their original position. Lubricate the valve lifters and engine block valve lifter bore with clean engine oil, then apply the lifters into the lifter guides with the flat portion on the top of the lifter matching the flat portion of the lifter guide bore and apply the lifter completely into the guide bore. Mount the valve lifters and guide onto the engine block and then the valve lifter guide bolt and tighten to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Last but not least, install the Cylinder Head and gasket.
