2001 Chevrolet Prizm Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the tie rod end on 2001 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: A repair or service operation on the Tie Rod End requires two essential tools namely steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B). Start by elevating the vehicle and move to remove the combination of front wheel and tire assembly. Place matchmarks on the outer tie rod , inner tie rod nut , and inner tie rod . The service starts with loosening the inner tie rod nut before removing the outer tie rod nut and its accompanying cotter pin. The outer tie rod requires removal from the knuckle in line with the instructions on the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B) device before removing the outer tie rod. First position and match the outer tie rod with the inner tie rod before tightening the inner tie rod nut. After installing the Steering Knuckle outer tie rod you should fasten the outer tie rod nut to the outer tie rod while tightening it to 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) and installing the cotter pin by continuing to tighten until you reach 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.). Never loosen the outer tie rod nut to insert the cotter pin. Drive the cotter pin through the hole in the tie rod stud yet avoid distorting the Rack and Pinion Boot when adjusting front toe position. The last step involves adjusting the front toe and securing the jam nut against the outer tie rod to 56 nm (41 ft. Lbs.).
