2001 Chevrolet Corvette Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The crankshaft balancer needs removal before changing the crankshaft front oil seal. Slowly separate the crankshaft oil seal from its position in front of the front cover. You must avoid both lubrication of the crankshaft oil seal sealing surface and reusing the front crankshaft oil seal. Treatment of the new oil seal's outer edge and the front cover oil seal bore area requires clean engine oil. Install the oil seal onto the J4147S threaded rod (with nut, washer, guide, and oil seal) into the end of the crankshaft through the use of Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478). Install the oil seal to the cover bore using the Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478). Secure the hex portion of the installer tool using a wrench while simultaneously rotating the installer nut clockwise by holding it with an additional wrench until the entire seal sits inside the cover bore. Examine the complete installation of the oil seal within the front cover bore after tool removal while ensuring its even positioning. Finally, reinstall the crankshaft balancer.
