The first step begins with raising the vehicle before starting the rear transfer case output shaft seal replacement. The first step requires removing shields from the transfer case when present. To continue the modification process remove the rear propeller shaft. Start by raising the vehicle and then proceed to remove the rear output shaft seal. Shove the rear retainer seal installer (J 29162) into the seal mating surface of both sides and lubricate everything with auto-trac fluid (GM P/N 12378396). Putting the rear propeller shaft back will complete the installation. Look for any oil loss in the transfer case then add proper amount of fluid when required. The installation process requires you to put back the transfer case shields before you lower the vehicle only when they are equipped.
