2000 Chevrolet Camaro Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2000 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: In order to service and repair the lower Ball Joint, raise and appropriately support the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel. Position a floor jack under the lower Control Arm and remove the lower Control Arm cotter pin, and remove and discard nut, lower Control Arm. It is important to place the floor jack under the shock absorber mounting location on lower Control Arm to maintain the spring and lower Control Arm position. To separate the assembly of the lower Ball Joint, Ball Joint separator/ Ball Joint tie rod (J39549) will be engaged on the lower Ball Joint and the Steering Knuckle. Then use of Ball Joint remover (J9519-7), Ball Joint pressing screw (J9519-18), and the Ball Joint c-clamp (J9519-23) is used to press the lower Ball Joint from the lower Control Arm. For installation, insert the new lower Ball Joint into the cavity of the lower Control Arm and press it using the Ball Joint installer (J9519-9), Ball Joint pressing screw (J9519-18), and Ball Joint c-clamp (J9519-23) until comes out completely through the lower Control Arm . Make sure the Ball Joint is tightly fit; otherwise, replace the lower control. Mount the Ball Joint to the Steering Knuckle and then put on the lower Control Arm nut and tighten it to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.). Do not loosen the Control Arm nut to get the cotter pin slot into place. By a maximum of 1/6 of a turn, over torquing the nut is allowed. Make sure to install a new lower Control Arm cotter pin; take off the floor jack from the lower Control Arm, put in the tire and wheel, bring the vehicle back down, and align the wheels.
