2000 Cadillac Catera Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil filter on 2000 Cadillac Catera?
A: Your repair and service procedures for oil filters need a flat vehicle position and should start with vehicle lifting for stability. Let the pan drain at least for five minutes before removing its plug. Drain oil by removing the oil pan Drain Plug followed by removal of the Oil Filter Drain Plug to allow complete drainage. Use either a cap-type or strap-type wrench to protect filter components while removal happens. Begin by removing the plastic cap from the Oil Filter cartridge housing then extract the Oil Filter cartridge from this plastic cap. Dry-wipe the plastic cap and the Oil Filter cartridge housing. A socket for the sleeve present within the housing must be used when the Oil Filter cartridge housing comes detached from the engine block. The engine block requires the housing to be tightened at the sleeve to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.) when you re-install it. Install the Oil Filter Drain Plug by tightening it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). The tabs of the Oil Filter cartridge must properly engage the plastic cap so it creates a clear audible sound when fully seated. The new Oil Filter cartridge needs installation into its plastic cap while keeping a small amount of clean oil on the o-ring located around the plastic cap area. A cap-type or strap-type wrench serves to protect the installation while you tighten the plastic cap onto the Oil Filter cartridge housing to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Use a clean dry cloth to wipe the oil pan Drain Plug then install it by applying 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) of torque. Put the proper engine oil into the vehicle while it is at its lowest position. Engine damage can be avoided by turning off the engine anytime it takes longer than 5 seconds to establish proper oil pressure. After starting the engine check that the pressure gauge shows adequate pressure development before visually inspecting the Oil Filter and oil pan Drain Plug areas for leakage. Turn off the engine before measuring the oil level in the engine and make required adjustments.
