GMC Sierra 3500 Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Why is it important to inspect the Steering Shaft after a collision on GMC Sierra 3500?
    A:
A post-collision vehicle inspection requires evaluation of the Steering Column Intermediate Shaft due to its convoluted assembly. Model C1500 contains just a single convoluted area whereas the others feature two of these areas. It is mandatory to check the convoluted areas for damage right after deploying the Air Bags. A straight edge should be applied to different portions of the intermediate shaft to evaluate its straightness during inspection. Any identified bending or damage to the shaft requires replacing it.
  • Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on GMC Sierra 3500?
    A:
To replace the lower intermediate Steering Shaft, first align the front wheels with the straight ahead position and the Steering Column in the lock position to avoid damaging the sir coil assembly. Stab the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the Steering Column lower access hole. For vehicles of 6.6l diesel engine, it is necessary to take off the left charge air cooler hose. Mark the relationship between the components of the intermediate shaft for correct installation, the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft, the lower shaft coupler to the steering gear input shaft. Lift and remove the bolt between the two shafts, followed by the bolt of the coupler on the lower shaft and then retreat the intermediate shaft assembly sliding it towards the dash to clear the steering gear input shaft. To install, put the upper end of the intermediate shaft into the upper shaft and the lower end into the intermediate shaft coupler, matching the previously made marks when reinstalling the same shaft. Connect the lower end of the intermediate shaft coupler onto the steering gear worm shaft followed by installation and tightening of the lower shaft coupler and the upper end of the shaft using the bolt on the lower to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) and 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) respectively. On the vehicles using a 6.6l diesel motor, reinstall the left charge air cooler hose and, at last, remove the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J42640) from the car Steering Column lower access slot.
