The powertrain control module (PCM) service requires the option between replacing the pcm unit or programming its electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM). A proper inspection must be performed on the pcm to verify the right replacement part. Perform the installation of the new service pcm only after confirming that it is the faulty unit. Turn off the ignition prior to disconnecting or reconnecting power to the pcm because this process includes working with battery cables, pcm pigtail, pcm Fuse and jumper cables. Proceed to inspect pcm module connector gaskets for correct installation because they serve to block contaminant penetration through the pcm connector surfaces. Also remove all debris from pcm connector contact points. The programming process needs to be completed for the new pcm. Restablish the black Battery Cable while reinstalling the air cleaner assembly. The new pcm needs programming through the service programming system (SPS) procedures during installation.
