GMC Savana 1500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on GMC Savana 1500?
    A:
The Camshaft replacement requires beginning with radiator support and engine front cover removal followed by removal of valve lifters. Start by unbolting the Camshaft sensor and sensor bolt then use the Crankshaft to align the timing marks of both the sprockets. Detach bolt number 206 from the Camshaft sprocket while keeping in mind the same diameter of all Camshaft journals to prevent bearing damage. Remove first the bolts (231) with Timing Chain Tensioner (232) from the assembly before taking out the Camshaft sprocket and moving the Timing Chain into position. Use a bolt as a handle to pull out the Camshaft carefully from the engine block after removing each retainer bolt (204) along with retainer (203). A detailed inspection as well as cleaning process should take place on both the Camshaft along with its bearings. After applying clean engine oil on Camshaft journals and bearings you should carefully reinstall the Camshaft into the engine block while removing the bolt. Put the Camshaft retainer (203) into place while its sealing gasket faces the engine block using a clean surface on the gasket. The first design hex head bolts require tightening to 25 nm (18 lb ft) while the second design torx(R) head bolts need 15 nm (11 lb ft). Hang the en 46330 onto the compressed Timing Chain Tensioner guide. Install the Timing Chain Tensioner (232) together with bolts (231) before tightening them to 25 nm (18 lb ft). The location pin of the Camshaft sprocket should match the alignment hole of the sprocket while ensuring proper alignment between the teeth. After sprocket marks of Camshaft and Crankshaft align correctly install the Camshaft sprocket (205) and Timing Chain (208). Begin by installing new Camshaft sprocket bolt (206) while following initial torque of 75 nm (55 lb ft) before applying a secondary 50 degrees of torque. The Camshaft sensor o-ring should be inspected for damage before using an unbroken one as replacement. To conclude the process install the valve lifters followed by the front cover and radiator support.
  • Q: How to service and repair the camshaft on GMC Savana 1500?
    A:
The repair and servicing process for the Camshaft begins by disconnecting the battery negative cable and continues with removal of the engine cover and air cleaner assembly and Radiator and A/C Condenser and engine cooling fan and valve lifters and Timing Chain and Camshaft sprocket and balance shaft drive gear. Use three (5/16-18 x 4.0 inch) bolts to access the front holes on the Camshaft retainer before rotating and pulling the Camshaft out of the bearings when replacing the retainer bolts so you can remove the engine Camshaft. Before installing a new Camshaft the technician should change engine oil and Oil Filter then apply gm engine oil supplement (GM P/N 1052367) or an equivalent product. Users should apply engine oil from gm p/n 12345610 or equivalent along with engine oil supplement from gm p/n 1052367 or equivalent to all Camshaft lobes and bearing journals before applying them to the bearings. Use three (5/16-18 x 4.0 inch) bolts as a support to install the engine Camshaft and afterward remove those bolts. To reuse fasteners you must apply threadlock (GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent) on the Camshaft retainer bolts before installing the retainer and its bolts to a 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) torque setting. The procedure demands installation of the balance shaft drive gear along with the Timing Chain and Camshaft sprocket and valve lifters before you can move on to installing the A/C Condenser and engine cooling fan and Radiator and perform the engine cooling system fill. Complete engine air conditioning recharging then add the engine cover while establishing the vehicle's black battery wire.
