The Timing Chain in GMC Jimmy is a very operational part that helps to co-ordinate the movement of the camshaft and crankshaft which is necessary for the valve timing and thus, for the efficient functioning of the vehicle's engine. This metal chain is situated at the front side of an engine, need frequent greasing, and is standard on large displacement engines. Metal timing chains have been adopted from the late 1990s to replace rubber timing belt because metal timing chains are very durable and only require replacement very rarely. Despite having relatively low mileage drive train warranties can suffer from lubrication problems or difficulties with the tensioner and chain guides; the potential for this is signified by a rattling sound originating from the front of the engine. Pushrod engines allow a short chain drive to be used since such drive is quieter and wears out faster than gears would be a better idea for GMC Jimmy models.

GMC Jimmy Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on GMC Jimmy?
    A:
To replace the Timing Chain and the sprockets, its initial to dispose of the engine front cover and the Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. On rotating the engine, a 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt can be bolted in the end of the Crankshaft that must not be the Crankshaft balancer bolt and should not be longer than 1 inch to prevent damage. Rotate the Crankshaft until such that the timing lines on both the sprockets are identified and the number four cylinder is at top dead centre (TDC) for the compression stroke. Then, you need to take off the camshaft sprocket bolts, then the camshaft sprocket and also the camshaft Timing Chain. Take out the Crankshaft sprocket with Crankshaft gear remover (J 5825-A) and remove the Crankshaft balancer key. Analyze the camshaft Timing Chain and both sprockets for any wear or damage and clean, dry all components. For installation, insert the Crankshaft balancer key in the Crankshaft keyway with it being parallel or slightly inclined. Use the keyway receptacle of the Crankshaft sprocket balancer key to align it with Crankshaft sprocket and engage the Crankshaft gear installer (J 5590) after positioning it to fix the Crankshaft sprocket. Install the camshaft sprocket with the alignment mark in the 6 o'clock and the Crankshaft sprocket mark at the 12 o'clock mark. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 55 nm (18 ft. Lbs.), and the reinstallation of the Crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring use the Crankshaft gear installer (J 5590) to align its keyway with the balancer key before pushing until fully seated. Finally, yo remove the bolt from the crank shaft and attach the front cover of the engine.
