Most GMC Jimmy vehicles have been fitted with dual circuit master cylinders from 1967 to correct the problem, though in the unlikely event of a hydraulic failure in one of the circuits, sufficient pressure for stopping the vehicle can be gotten from the other circuit. Leakages,Corrosion or internal failures of the Brake Master Cylinder can be eliminated through proper periodic maintenance for better and secure braking system.

GMC Jimmy Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on GMC Jimmy?
    A:
A proper Brake Master Cylinder overhaul starts by removing the component from the vehicle with subsequent mounting flange placement into a bench vise while keeping the primary Piston's rear accessible. Check the reservoir cap area before you remove it with the diaphragm. Inspect the parts for any damage such as cuts, cracks, nicks or deformations while replacing all defective components. Use a round smooth tool to slowly push down on the master cylinder's primary Piston while removing the Piston retainer and primary Piston assembly inside the cylinder bore. The secondary Piston can be extracted by applying low-pressure air down the front outlet port into the master cylinder system while plugging all side inlet ports and the rear outlet port. This operation also removes the primary Piston assembly, piston retainer, and seals. Clean all internal and external surfaces of the master cylinder and secondary Piston and return spring using denatured alcohol to detect issues such as cracks, scoring, pitting or corrosion that require replacing the master cylinder. Apply delco supreme 11(R) (GM P/N 12377967) brake fluid or its equivalent dot-3 fluid from a fresh, sealed container to lubricate the master cylinder bore and secondary Piston assembly and return spring along with all repair parts before air-drying all components. The assembly should begin with the lubricated new primary seal and retainer together with the new secondary seal attached to the secondary Piston. Afterward install the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore followed by installation of the lubricated new primary Piston assembly. Use a smooth round-ended tool to push down the primary Piston while installing the new Piston retainer and reinstall the master cylinder reservoir with its cap and diaphragm before reinstalling the master cylinder into the vehicle.
