- Q: How to Replace a CV Boot and CV Joint on a Front Wheel Drive Shaft for Inner on Chevrolet Traverse?A:To change front wheel drive shaft inner joint and boot, first get rid of the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle and hold it constant in a soft jawed vise. Now use side cutters to remove and throw away the small boot clamp from the boot , then use the appropriate tool to remove and throw away large boot clamp from the boot . Then the boot is to be taken out from the tripot housing , and the inner tripot housing is to be separated from the wheel drive shaft . Use the conduit tool to remove the outer tripot spider retaining ring off the wheel drive shaft and the tripot spider act. In case available, pull out the inner tripot retaining ring from the wheel drive shaft, and then the wheel drive shaft boot. Check the inner joint of the wheel drive shaft. For assembly, attach the boot into the wheel drive shaft making sure that it is well inserted into the groove. If necessary, install the inner tripot retaining ring . Position the tripot spider , so that it comes into contact with the shoulder on the wheel drive shaft, then install the outer tripot spider retaining ring , using the right hand tool. Using the j 35910 - drive axle seal clamp pliers pinch down the boot clamp until the space between them is 1.8 mm (0.07 inch). Mount the tripot housing on the wheel drive shaft and the wheel drive shaft boot on the tripot housing. Put about half of the lubricant in the boot and the other half in tripot housing. Close the boot clamp by using the j 35910 - drive axle seal clamp pliers, ratchet wrench, and breaker bar in such a way that the gap is 1.9 mm (0.07 inch). While taking out any extra lubricant from the tripot housing and wheel drive shaft, rotate the tripot joint housing in a round movement so that the lubricant is well distributed. Lastly, use the vise to extract the wheel drive shaft from it and put it back into the vehicle.

With J 35910 - Drive Axle Boot Clamp Pliers, a breaker bar, and a torque wrench or ratchet, compress the clamp so that the gap is equal to 1.8 mm; 0.07 in by the end of the process. Put half of the lubricant into the CV joint boot and the other half into the CV joint. The installation of the CV joint boot and clamp is done to the CV joint housing. For the vehicles with ear type boot clamp, using J 35910 - Drive Axle Boot Clamp Pliers and a breaker bar with a torque/ratchet wrench to tighten until the gap is 1.9mm (0.07 in) should ensure that the boot clamp is properly closed and seated. For earless type clamps, go to closing the boot clamp using CH 48894 - Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers. Rock the CV joint in circular motion to spread the lubricant within the CV joint housing, clean the CV joint on the outside of the CV joint housing, affix the CV joint and boot, then the wheel drive shaft.
