The j 42640 (
Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin) needs installation into the Steering Column lower access hole before left side Exhaust Manifold replacement. Lower the vehicle reboundingly while supporting it at its full height and pull out the left wheelhouse liner. Tear away the
Catalytic Converter to Exhaust Manifold nuts before lowering part of the vehicle to reach the wheel opening. Unplugging the
Spark Plug Wires starts with twisting each boot a half turn followed by pulling only the boot section. Rewrite both
Steering Shaft coupling bolts on the upper intermediate Steering Shaft along with the nut. This action will detach it from the Steering Column. The technician needs to discard both the Exhaust Manifold Gasket along with the Catalytic Converter seal by removing the Exhaust Manifold bolts and Exhaust Manifold from the engine. Before replacing the Exhaust Manifold all Exhaust Manifold heat shield bolts and the shield must be removed. Attach the Exhaust Manifold heat shield to its position before installing the bolts then apply 9 nm (80 lb in) torque to them. Apply gm p/n 12345493 threadlock (Canadian P/N 10953488) as a 5mm (0.2in) wide band on the Exhaust Manifold bolt threads after cleaning the threads thoroughly. Place the new Catalytic Converter seal while positioning the Exhaust Manifold Gasket with Exhaust Manifold against the cylinder head so it fits correctly to the converter. Begin by installing the Exhaust Manifold bolts with a torque of 15 nm (11 lb ft) starting from the center two bolts then move to alternating side-to-side bolts before final tightening to 20 nm (15 lb ft) with the same pattern. A flat punch should be used to bend the gasket tab near the rear of the gasket against the cylinder head surface. Install the upper intermediate Steering Shaft onto the Steering Column by aligning its Steering Column marks while using the coupling bolt and nut to secure it with a torque of 50 nm (37 lb ft). Reinstall the Spark Plug Wires on spark plugs at
Ignition Coils with careful boot orientation by pushing from the sides on every connection point. Finally lift and support the vehicle completely afterward you should install the Catalytic Converter to Exhaust Manifold nuts which need to be tightened to 50 nm (37 lb ft). The j 42640 tool should be removed from the Steering Column lower access hole once the left wheelhouse liner is reinstalled when the body is at a partial height.
