Chevrolet SSR Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the upper intermediate steering shaft on Chevrolet SSR?
    A:
Before starting the upper intermediate Steering Shaft replacement be sure to lock the Steering Column and keep the front wheels straight to protect the sir coil assembly from misalignment and damage. The first step involves turning the Ignition Switch to lock position then removing the key. You can secure the Steering Column with the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) by using the access hole in the lower trim cover. First lift the vehicle before you disassemble the pinch bolt which connects the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft. First disconnect the upper intermediate shaft from the lower intermediate shaft before lowering the vehicle. Note and keep track of the Steering Column pinch bolt direction for future reassembly when you remove the knee bolster bracket. Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the vehicle by disconnecting it from the Steering Column. The installer should set the upper intermediate shaft into the vehicle before mounting it onto the Steering Column while making sure the pinch bolt goes back in both same direction it came out to keep clear of the Steering Column housing. When installing knee bolster bracket first tighten the upper intermediate shaft Steering Column pinch bolt nut to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Reposition the vehicle with the wheel off the ground and join the upper and lower intermediate shafts together before installing the pinch bolt between them at 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). To finish the process lower the vehicle and remove the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) through the access hole to unlock the Steering Column.
