Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Brake Disc Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Correct Brake Disc Lateral Runout Using on Chevrolet Silverado 2500?
    A:
A check for Brake Disc thickness variation is needed at first step of disc service since excessive variation leads to brake pulsation problems. Clear all rotating parts such as brake discs from their contact with caliper and caliper bracket. During service and repair take off the conical Brake Disc washers (J 45101-100) and the lug nuts from the assembled lateral runout measurement operation. Check if any unwanted particles or dirt exist on the hub/axle flange mounting area and the Brake Disc surface. Follow the lathe setup instructions provided by the manufacturer and use it to refine the Brake Disc while checking thickness every time you make a cut. You must replace the Brake Disc since it remains thicker than set limits despite the refinishing process. After your work finish the surfaces with non-directional steel wool of 120 grit aluminum oxide or sand the surfaces with 150 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper, and then clean both friction areas with either denatured alcohol or brake cleaner. Check the Brake Disc's combined thickness measurement after taking out the lathe system. When the measurement fits within acceptable ranges put back the brake caliper and loosen the brake pedal several times to secure the disc before you take out the brake washer and lug nuts.
  • Q: How to replace the front brake disc on Chevrolet Silverado 2500?
    A:
You need the disc resurfacing kit (J 41013) and wheel hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A) to replace the front Brake Disc. Start by wiping off the protective covering from new disc friction surfaces with denatured alcohol to prepare for cleaning. Position the car safely on stands and take out the tire wheel set. Remove the front wheel hub extension from dual wheel vehicles when performing this task. Insert a large screwdriver into the disc center to stop rotation while you note the hub extension position. Unscrew hub extension bolts afterward. If the hub extension is properly seated press gently all around it with a soft mallet. Place a c-clamp over the brake caliper to move its pistons back so you can disconnect the brake system components. Place mechanic's wire under the brake caliper to protect brake hose from harm during handling. Take out the brake caliper and bracket unit alongside its mount while securing the hydraulic hose connection. Use the dead blow hammer on the disc retaining push nuts to release the disc from the hub without force. Clean all parts before adding penetrating oil and using two m10 x 1.5 bolts to push the disc off from corrosion. Before starting use the wheel hub resurfacing kit (J 42450-A) and disc resurfacing kit (J 41013) to prepare the hub and disc contact areas. Check for unwanted debris and verify the hub flange has no damaged edges. Put the disc in position and check its lateral runout results after installation for best results. If necessary, correct the lro. Attach the caliper and bracket system after cleaning each bolt thread and applying threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canada P/N 10953488) before tightening the bracket mounting bolts to their specified torque value. Put the front wheel hub extension in place for double-wheeled vehicles and set it straight to its original position before tightening nuts to recommended torque. Reinstall the tire and wheel set before lowering the vehicle while working through proper Brake Pad seating by using the brake pedal several times until you fill the reservoir with fresh brake fluid.
