The Shock Absorber of Chevrolet HHR manufactured vehicles is as important as its counterpart the struts in the suspension process. These components assist in reducing bouncing and the overall impact of shock impulses making it comfortable and easier to control the car. Over the years, there have been different specifications on the shock absorber where there is the twin-tube and the mono-tube where there are differences in the mechanisms where the hydraulic fluid is being controlled in a different manner, and this results in different performances while driving. Besides, the advancement in technologies like the electrorheological and magnetorheological dampers has led to the design of semi-active or adaptive suspensions improving on comfort and control in road operations.

Chevrolet HHR Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front shock absorber on Chevrolet HHR?
    A:
The starting point for strut assembly replacement necessitates removal of upper mounting nuts. The vehicle should be lifted with frame-contact vehicle lifts only because any contact with the suspension can create difficulties. Support the vehicle using a frame-contact vehicle lift and then eliminate the tire and wheel before disconnecting the stabilizer shaft link from the strut assembly. Start by removing both lower struts together along with their bolts and nuts before removing the abs wiring bracket (if available) from the assembly. Follow the fastener notice before starting with strut assembly installation. Secure the strut upper mounting nuts with a torque of 20 n.m (15 lb ft). A prevailing torque fastener can be reused if both components show no signs of rust and if it successfully resists 3 n.m (27 lb in) of torque/drag before properly bedding in; however, total replacement may be necessary in some cases. Otherwise, replace the fastener. Equipment-dependent installation requires screws, nuts and an abs wiring bracket which needs mounting before applying 120 n.m (89 lb ft) torque to lower strut nuts. Secure the stabilizer shaft link to the strut assembly following proper torque settings at 80 n.m (59 lb ft). After this step install the tire and wheel while lowering the vehicle and perform front wheel alignment.
  • Q: How to service and repair the front coil springs and shock absorber on Chevrolet HHR?
    A:
In order to service and repair the suspension strut, remove the strut from the vehicle. Mount the strut into the strut spring compressor (J 45400). Compress spring by having it at the point where strut is free flowing then rotate forcing screw of spring compressor until you compress coil spring. Remove the professional tool's upper strut mount and coil spring by loosening the compressor forcing screw. Bolt the strut shaft with a 45 torxsocket and a strut rod socket or something similar to remove the upper strut mount nut. After you have taken out the upper strut mount and coil spring from strut spring compressor (J 45400), remove the strut from the compressor. For assembly, replace the coil spring and upper strut mount on the strut spring compressor (J 45400) and turn the spring compressor screw forcing screw until the coil spring is compressed. Next, you need to install the strut to the coil spring and the upper strut mount and loosely install the strut retaining nut. With a 45 torx(R) socket securing the strut shaft, mount the strut rod socket, or equivalent to tighten the upper strut mount nut to 75 n.m (55 lb ft). Lastly, take the strut out of the strut spring compressor (J 45400) and put the strut into the vehicle.
