When preparing to replace the Rack And Pinion, start by turning the Steering Wheel to the straight ahead with removal of the key from the ignition, and then turn the wheel to the counterclockwise, locking it at the Steering Column. Lift up and support the vehicle, then decompose the wheels. It is essential not to rotate the intermediate shaft after it has been separated from the Rack And Pinion and to avoid risk of damage. Remove the pinch bolt at the Rack And Pinion to intermediate shaft and discard it, then remove the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion. Both Rack And Pinion outer tie rod to knuckle nuts are removed and discarded. Using the steering linkage and tie rod puller (J 24319-B), disassemble the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles, followed by removing the Rack And Pinion bolts and the rear transmission mount. Cautiously remove the Rack And Pinion from the frame and the vehicle with the lh wheel opening. For the installation, the Rack And Pinion should be placed back into the frame at the lh wheel opening, then the Rack And Pinion bolts are to be tightened with 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs). Reinstall the rear transmission mount, attach your intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion, and install a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt, sealing it in with 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Next, bolt on the outer tie rods to the steering knuckles and hand tighten the new outer tie rod nuts then to 60 nm (44 ft.lbs.). Finally, install the front wheels again, and fold the vehicle down, as well as adjust the toe if needed.
