The Oxygen Sensor in Chevrolet HHR vehicles refers to the device that is used to measure the quantities of unburned oxygen in the exhaust as a way of regulating the air-fuel mixture for efficiency in the vehicle's performance and lowered emission. From this, it creates a voltage signal out of the degree of the oxygen concentration and this signal is managed by the engine control computer to control the degree of the fuel injector. This particular feedback circuit helps to make the engine working in a 'closed loop' which in turn increases the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Chevrolet HHR models tend to use Zirconium dioxide oxygen sensors, and can incorporate both the upstream and downstream sensors. The upstream sensor activates when there is need to make adjustments on the air-fuel mixture, while the downstream sensor evaluates the catalytic converter condition. Some of the latest models may have wide-band air/fuel ratio sensors which can measure the air and fuel mixtures in a wider scale than that of a narrow-band sensors. Both can be contaminated and degraded with age which in turn increases emissions with tendencies of aggravating engine performance.

Chevrolet HHR Oxygen Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Heated Oxygen Sensor 1 on Chevrolet HHR?
    A:
To replace heated oxygen sensor 1, one needs to gather required tools such as at least oxygen sensor wrench (J 39194). Pull the hood open and disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA), retainer, disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the ho2s electrical connector and remove the ho2s electrical connector clip from the camshaft cover. If the code does not repeat in mode 2, there may be vacuum leaks on the exhaust gas recirculation system, egr valve, connectors, and the upstream pcv. Perform a vacuum tests and code I/O to find the leaks. Failure of the position 1 ho2s: use the f-code tool to update the wthst and update the hsa code. If reinstalling the old ho2s make sure to coat the threads with anti-seize compound gm p/n 12377953 for an equivalent, because a special anti-seize compound that consists of liquid graphite and glass bead is used on the ho2s threads to make removal easier. Mount the position 1 ho2s using the oxygen sensor wrench (j 39194) and apply it to 42 N.m (31 lb ft). Connect once more the engine wiring harness electrical connector to the ho2s electrical connector, tighten once more on the ho2s electrical connector clip to the camshaft cover, and finally, tighten the cpa retainer before closing the hood.
