If you wish to replace the parking brake rear cable (Drum), begin by liberating the front floor console and make sure that park brake lever is totally set. Remove the tension from the park brake cables by loosening the adjusting nut all the way to the end of the front cable threaded rod without using tools other than hand tools. Next, you should remove the rear seat below cushion and the rear carpet retainers, and then move the carpet forward so that you will have a means of reaching the park's back brake cables and body pass-thru grommets. With the park brake lever released, pull off the suitable rear park brake cable end from the cable equalizer and the rear cable fitting from the park brake lever bracket before you take off the cable from the lever assembly. The rear park brake cable body pass-thru grommet should be released and the vehicle raised. If using the reused park brake cable, relieve the tab on the cable underbody retainer as well as remove the cable. While replacing a new cable, let go of the underbody retainer from its position attached to the vehicle underbody. Gentle pry against the edge of the c-shaped retainer on the park- brake cable to disconnect it from the bracket on the rear axle trailing pivot, then move the cable from under-body of vehicle. First take off the rear tire and wheel assembly together with the
Brake Drum. Then with the flat-bladed screwdriver, press the visible retaining tab on the park brake cable fitting, swing the released side back into the backing plate and turn the cable to expose the other retaining tab and press the remaining retaining tab one to release the cable fitting from the backing plate, move the cable return spring back through the opening and press the cable towards the rear of the vehicle to clear the cable end from the slot of the park brake lever. Pull the cable as far as possible until it is completely detached from the lever and pull out the cable. The new park brake cable can also be installed by inserting it through the opening in the backing plate, the cable return spring needs to be placed just rearward of the spring tab. Pull the cable to the rear outside of the trailing brake shoe until cable end is passed slot on park brake lever then press the cable to the slot to apply downward pressure on cable and pull to the front to hold it through slot. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to put into the opening at the lever so that the cable doesn't come off, pass the cable return spring via the opening after opening the cable fitting and secure the cable fitting to the backing plate, with the retaining tabs into place. Adjust the rear drum brakes, place on the Brake Drum, and the reare tire and wheel assembly. Run the cable into the vehicle underbody opening and place the c-shaped retainer on the park brake cable into the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot and secure the park brake cable pass-thru grommet to the vehicle underbody opening. When a new cable has been fitted, then secure the underbody retainer to the vehicle; if reusing, install the cable to the underbody retainer and click the tab into place. Lower the vehicle and fasten the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket and connect the cable end to the cable equalizer. Redesign the carpet, fit the rear carpet retainers, and the rear seat lower cushion. Finally, adjust the park brake cable tension and replace the front floor console.
