Chevrolet Classic Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul brake calipers on Chevrolet Classic?
    A:
To overhaul the brake caliper, first, remove the front brake caliper from the vehicle. Then, apply a low pressure compressed air into the caliper bore via fluid inlet hole to drive out the Brake Caliper Piston. Carefully remove part piston dust boot seal from the seal counterbore a-proper caliper using a small wooden or plastic tool and throw it away, then part piston seal from the caliper bore. Then, take off the bleeder valve and cap of the caliper. Clean the Brake Caliper Piston bore and seal counterbore and caliper piston with the denatured alcohol or equivalent, and not using any abrasive. Dry out these components with the help of non-lubricated, filtered air and check the caliper bore for presence of cracks, scoring, pitting, excessive rust or corrosion. If rust or corrosion is present, try to remove it using very fine emery paper; alternative worry: if not possible, replace the caliper assembly. Also need for replacing piston if there are any cracks, scoring, or damage to chrome plating on caliper piston. To install, lubricate the new piston seal with delco supreme 11® gm p/n 12377967, canadian p/n 992667, or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed container, and install it into the caliper bore. Next, slip the caliper piston into the bore and again the new caliper dust boot seal . Recap the bleeder valve and cap placed back on caliper and run the valve in and tighten firmly; lastly reinstall brake caliper onto vehicle.
  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on Chevrolet Classic?
    A:
Before you install a new brake caliper inspect the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid in relation to its top and bottom marks. Drain the fluid to bring it to the center point if its current level exceeds this midpoint. After lifting the car and taking off the tire wheel assembly install two screwed-on wheel nuts to hold the rotor against the hub. Apply a large c-clamp tool to move the piston in the caliper housing and make space to take off the assembly from the rotor. Pull out the brake hose and caliper bolt assembly while keeping the copper brake washers aside. Plug the caliper housing and brake hose ends to stop fluid leakage. Take out the 2 guide pins from the caliper mounting bracket when removing brake caliper bolts. Hold the bolts with a wrench to keep the brake caliper pin in place. Check boot condition and examine guide pins and caliper mount for wear to replace worn parts. Apply high temperature silicone brake lubricant on both caliper pins and boots before putting them onto the caliper mounting bracket to end the installation. Use new copper washers below the brake hose bolt to fasten the caliper bolts with 31 nm torque while also tightening the hose bolt with 50 nm torque. Put on the wheel with two lug nuts removed and tighten the tire assembly. Lower the car while refilling the master cylinder with clean brake fluid. Fix all brake system leaks through the hydraulic system's latter stage bleeding process.
