But for this flexible rubber or plastic part, it is able to retain the lubricant needed while at the same time protect the CV joints from the detrimental effects of dirt and debris. The Cadillac STS has varied CV joints; for instance, the fixed and plunging that are uniquely designed to support given circumstances on the road. The CV boot should be inspected on a regular basis because, if damaged, it will lead to joint failure on the vehicle reducing efficiency and safety. The Cadillac STS is one of the Cadillac's models which were called luxury sports sedans and appeared in 1988; CV Boot has remained a part of the car since its genesis and is critical to its function. Supports a variety of STS models because Cadillac drivers need to always count on the CV Boot quality no matter the generation it belongs to. Cadillac STS CV Boot Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Front Wheel Drive Shaft Outer CV Boot and CV Joint on Cadillac STS?
    A:
Secondly, in order to replace the front wheel drive shaft outer joint and boot, one must ensure that the wheel drive shaft has been dislodged from the vehicle. Always being careful to prevent the bearings from coming apart, completely cover the Axle Shaft in a shop towel and attach the wheel drive shaft horizontally to a bench vise in order to hold it. Utilise a side cutter to cut off and dispose of large and small seal retaining clamps from the outer joint seal. On the side with the large diameter, move the seal away from the joint face and separate the seal from the joint outer race. Clean out the grease from the inner race of joints, cage and balls. To remove the outer joint from the Axle Shaft, locate the housing of the outer joint horizontally, then put a wood block between the seal and joint and hit the block using a hammer to compress the Axle Shaft retaining clip. If needed use a brass drift on the inner race to help with forcing. After removing the outer joint, dispose the Axle Shaft retaining ring and seal and clean all components with solvent and air dry. Examine the inner race, outer race, cage, balls, and Axle Shaft for a breakage or abrasion. To assemble, place the cage upside with the larger radius corners up, place the inner race into the cage, make sure it is a complete assembly. Align the inner race ball tracks with the cage windows and then wrap a shop towel over the joint outer race splined shaft and secure it in a bench vise vertically. Set the inner race and the cage parallel with the outer race at the 90-degree angle while ensuring the inner race ring groove is set down. Mount balls sequentially pushing them down the cage for access to ball tracks and use a brass drift to ensure the cage and inner race are properly seated. Apply about 60 percent.of the grease, from the service kit, into the outer joint, on the ball tracks, balls, cage, and inner race. Remove the outer joint from the vise, and make sure to wrap the shop towel around the Axle Shaft before placing a new small seal retaining clamp and seal onto the Axle Shaft, followed by a new retaining ring. Fasten the inner race splines onto the Axle Shaft splines, compress the Axle Shaft retaining ring, and hammer the outer joint onto the shaft using an improvised wood-block and hammer till the inner race sits well onto the shaft. Install the remaining piece of grease into the seal, place the small seal retaining clamp into the seal boot groove, and crimp the latter using j42572 until you get an omega shape, which has 1 mm gap. Position the large seal retaining clamp onto the seal, to make sure that it is not deformed, and crimp it with j 42572 to ensure it also has a 1 mm gap. Finally, check the outer to run smoothly by taking the wheel drive shaft vertically for rotating it in a circular way for several times.
  • Q: How to replace the rear wheel drive shaft inner CV boot on Cadillac STS?
    A:
To remove the rear wheel drive shaft inner joint boot, one has to take out the rear shaft wheel from the vehicle and hold it in a soft jawed vise taking care not to cut in the inboard or outboard boot so that sealing surface is not marred. Take off the boot clamps and remove using a side cutter, then remove the boot form the CV Joint and wheel drive shaft. Remove the cap using a hammer and a punch; in case of contamination in the inner components, dispose the rear wheel drive shaft assembly because the components cannot be serviced. Clean the grease with the inner race, cage and balls and remove the joint race retaining ring with snap ring pliers and pull the inner CV Joint assembly using hammer and brass drift. Examine the inner CV Joint before assemblage follows. Mount the inner boot and clamp, and insert the wheel drive shaft after pouring the lubricant from the service pack into the boot. Always make sure that the boot is snugly installed on the groove wheel drive shaft and then apply a block of wood or brass drift to fit the CV Joint on the wheel drive shaft. In snap ring pliers, fit the new retaining ring for the CV Joint while making sure all interior parts are lubre. Put the remaining lubricant on the ball bearings and cage of the CV Joint and clamp it between the bolts and washers before applying the crimp. Check the boot shape and damage, adjust as required. Close the inner and outer boot clamps using the j 42572 - pliers, until the gross gap a= 1.0 (0.040 in). Clean the cap using alcohol-type solvent and air dry it, and subsequently apply a 3 mm (0.118 in) bead on the inner diameter of the CV Joint face. Line up the holes for the mounting fasteners in the cap and CV Joint, then screw the CV Joint cap on with the automatic installer j 22928-b . The inner joint needs to be rotated 4 or 5 times to spread the lubricant, and also test its performance; there should be some leftover lubricant wiped from wheel drive shaft assembly before attaching the wheel drive shaft.
