Buick Rainier Universal Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the universal joint with an external snap ring on Buick Rainier?
    A:
The necessary replacement of the universal joint requires you to gather two specific tools: U-Joint Bearing Separator (J9522-3) and U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover (J9522-5). Place the propeller shaft horizontally on the press but never fasten the tubing to prevent damage during replacement. Use a marker to designate the proper positioning of the propeller shaft parts. Use pliers to grip snap ring ends and try to pull out the ring. When needed strike the cup gently to reduce pressure. Put the U-Joint Bearing Separator J9522-3 on horizontal bearing cups to push the lower bearing cup out of the yoke ear when you hold the lower yoke on a size 30 mm (1-1/8 inch) hex head socket or size 27 mm (1-1/16 inch) socket. Push the U-Joint Bearing Spacer Remover part J9522-5 into the space between the seal and the bearing cup when the first tool fails to extract the bearing cup. Push the cup out as needed. The propeller shaft rotation lets you mark the slip yoke position to tube. After taking out the cross and joint parts check the bearing cup bores and retaining ring grooves for cleanliness using proper tools. To build the yoke you should first place a bearing cup into one half and then mount the cross for smooth trunnion insertion. Press the bearing cup until it reaches the yoke ear level and mark the matching side. Make sure trunnions fit properly afterward. Press harder when you see the retainer groove and check for bearing friction during this stage. Attach the bearing retainer into its groove but press it using the dead blow hammer when snapshots do not happen easily. Apply chassis grease over the snap ring before pressing to make installation easier.
