Buick Lucerne Tie Rod Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Rack and Pinion Inner Tie Rod (Quiet Valve) on Buick Lucerne?
    A:
A vehicle should begin quiet valve inner Tie Rod rack and pinion replacement through boot removal of the rack and pinion while securing the gear in a vise before changing the steering gear preload adjustment to protect the components. Place the shock dampener back into the inner Tie Rod assembly and slide it onto the rack. Insert a pipe wrench onto the rack's inner Tie Rod housing section while using a wrench on its flats to rotate it counterwise until the parts separate from each other. Move the shock dampener off the inner Tie Rod housing before putting it back onto the rack. Grab a pipe wrench on the rack while placing a wrench on inner Tie Rod housing flats. Rotate in counterclockwise motion until the rack disconnects from the inner Tie Rod assembly. For female rack configuration with male inner Tie Rod it is necessary to remove existing loctite(R) from rack and inner Tie Rod threads. For installations with a male rack and female inner Tie Rod, the use of loctite(R) is unnecessary. The shock dampener requires placement onto the rack with no debris on threads then application of loctite(R) 262 or equivalent to male inner Tie Rod threads when using a female rack and male inner Tie Rod configuration. Weld together the rack and inner Tie Rod while using a pipe wrench on the inner Tie Rod housing and a torque wrench (J 34028) to tighten the joint to 100 n.m (74 lb ft). Before applying loctite(R) 262 or equivalent (only needed if the combination uses female rack and male inner Tie Rod) clean all threads on the rack and shock dampener . Use a pipe wrench next to the inner Tie Rod housing but tighten the assembly with a j 34028 torque wrench on the flats of the housing to reach 100 n.m (74 lb ft). Engineering a vise should hold the inner Tie Rod assembly while staking both sides of female inner Tie Rod assembly housing to male rack when operating a system with male rack and female inner Tie Rod . Use a 0.25 mm gage to verify that both Tie Rod stakes cannot fit between the inner Tie Rod housing and the rack assembly. Apply the shock dampener over the inner Tie Rod housing until it reaches the housing's end and put together the Rack and Pinion Boot.
