- Q: How to replace the front CV joint and seal on 2007 Cadillac STS?A: When changing the front wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal, one should make sure that the wheel drive shaft has been removed from the vehicle. Start with wrapping the shop towel around the wheel drive shaft bar and lay it horizontally on the bench vise. Cut off the small seal clamp from the wheel drive shaft bar using side cutters and throw it out. Remove the large seal retaining clamp using the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and unclamped it from the tripot joint. Remove the inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing and slide it out from the joint towards the wheel drive shaft bar. Do not forget to remove housing from tripot joint spider and wheel drive shaft bar, then dispose of the old retaining ring by using the Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059). Underline the tripot spider position on the wheel drive shaft bar before disassembly and tap gently around the tripot spider face with brass drift and hammer to take it out. Check the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot joint spider assembly, housing, and trilobal tripot bushing for damaged or warn. For assembly, you should slide a new small seal clamp on to the small end of the inner joint seal and slide it into the boot groove on the wheel drive shaft bar and position it into the inner joint seal groove. Use the Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) to crimp the small seal retaining clamp ensuring it is neither over-tightened nor under-tightened. When reusing tripot spider old one, align the marks of reference to the wheel drive shaft bar with beveled edge to the bar for reassembling. Replace the tripot spider and retaining ring with the old one and fit it by placing it using the Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059), to ensure positive engagement. Grease from service kit should be placed in the wheel drive shaft inboard seal and re-pack the housing. Mount the trilobal tripot bushing on the housing; locate the larger new seal retaining clamp on the wheel drive shaft inboard seal; and slide the housing with these support arm housing end. Check that the seal is not twisted and use a measuring tool to measure the distance between the seal edges to be 104.7mm (4.12inches). While using the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566), align the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, tripot housing, and big seal retaining clamp while latching the clamp. Lastly, rotate the inner tripot several times to distribute the grease throughout tripot spider bearings.
