To replace the rear wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal you need some tools that include; drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572). Start by wrapping the shop towel around the Axle Shaft and lay the wheel drive shaft horizontally in a bench vise. Remove the large and small seal retaining clamps from the outer joint seal. A side cutter/other suitable tool should be employed. Discard after use. Disassemble the seal from the outer race of the joint at the big end and move it far from the joint face. Clean the joint inner race, cage, and balls by wiping out any grease present. To get the outer joint from the Axle Shaft, hold the inner one in a horizontal position, place the brass drift on the inner race, and tap on it with a hammer, pressuring the Axle Shaft retaining clip until the joint is free. Remove the seal off the Axle Shaft and throw out the Axle Shaft retaining ring. Clean the inner race, outer race, cage and balls and the Axle Shaft visible end using clean solvent and leave all parts to aerate. Check such parts for damage and wear. For assembly, place the larger radius corners of the cage windows up, slide the groove surface of the inner race up along with the cage windows, and align the inner race ball tracks with the cage windows. Wrap a shop towel around the joint outer race splined shaft and install it vertically on a bench vise. Line the cage and inner ring with outer ring ring groove and align it down. Put in the balls one after another, pressing downward on the cage where to reach the ball tracks and make sure that no gap exists between the ball and the inner race ball track. Put in about 60 percent grease from the service kit in the outer joint carefully spreading it over the ball tracks, balls, cage and inner race. Take out the outer joint of the bench vise, and cover the Axle Shaft with a shop towel and lay the horizontal wheel drive shaft into a bench vise. Replace the seal retaining clamp with a new small seal retaining clamp then a new sealing followed by a new retaining ring aligning the same with the seal. Press the inner race splines onto the Axle Shaft splines, squeeze the Axle Shaft ring spacer, and make sure that the Axle Shaft and the inner race are fully on. Hammer the inner joint onto Axle Shaft completely with a wood block and hammer. Put the other grease from the service kit into the seal, press the small seal retaining clamp into the seal boot groove, and crimp it with the drive shaft seal clamp pliers (J 42572) with the 1 mm (0.039 in) gap in the base of the omega ohm shape. Perform this process again for the large seal retaining clamp, examining the seal for the right shape and damage prior to crimping. Finally, test the outer joint's smooth operation by several rotation of the wheel drive shaft before installation.
