2006 Chevrolet SSR Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on 2006 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The procedure to replace the crankshaft front oil seal requires the removal of the crankshaft balancer and the crankshaft oil seal (140) from the front cover. A person should not use oil on the oil seal sealing surface and must always use new crankshaft oil seals. First clean the new oil seal (140) edge while also coating both the seal bore on the front cover with fresh engine oil. The installation of the crankshaft front oil seal (140) begins when inserting it onto the Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478) guide. The J 41478 threaded rod and a nut and washer along with a guide and oil seal should be inserted together into the crankshaft end. Insert the oil seal inside the front cover bore using the Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478) by applying torque to its installer nut while also gripping the hex part with wrenches until the seal reaches the correct position. Check that the J 41478 installed at the front cover bore reaches the entire bore surface during the inspection step. Finally, reinstall the crankshaft balancer.
