2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Shift Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Shift Cable in a Getrag 5 Speed Manual Transmission for 5 Speed on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: You should first activate the parking brake and position the transmission into the n gear before beginning to replace the Shift Cable in a getrag 5 speed manual transmission. After removing the console you must raise the cable retainers up. Detach both ends of the shift control cable from both the shift component assembly and the transmission lever while keeping track of their position to reinstall them accurately. You must disconnect the Shift Cable from the transmission cable bracket followed by raising and supporting the vehicle. The underbody Shift Cable nut needs removal before dropping the vehicle. Start by taking away the left instrument panel closeout panel then position aside the driver's side front carpet. The grommet must be separated from the Floor Pan while pulling the cable through the driver's floor opening to remove the component from the vehicle. The cable assembly installation requires drivers to guide it through their floor opening and position the grommet at the floor opening's edge. The installation process requires reattaching both the driver's side front carpet along with the left instrument panel closeout panel. Put up the vehicle once more then screw the Shift Cable attachment nut to the underbody section before tightening it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Install the shift cables to the transmission cable bracket after lowering the vehicle. Secure the transmission Shift Cable ends according to the original placement information from disassembly and attach them to the transmission shift levers and shift control assembly. You must both push the shifter neutral lock clip while sliding the shifter until the clip finds its center position and confirm the transmission stays in the neutral gear state. Before you add back the console apply pressure onto the locking tabs while pulling the shifter neutral lock clip to its original placement.
