2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 2500 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 2500?
A: Starting the Timing Chain and sprockets replacement process requires removal of the engine front cover. First line up timing marks between camshaft and crankshaft sprockets before removing camshaft sprocket bolts and camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. After placing the crankshaft protector button (J 42846) at the crankshaft's end you must remove the crankshaft sprocket with a suitable three jaw puller. Inspection of both the Timing Chain and its sprockets should follow cleansing procedures. The crankshaft sprocket installer (J 22102) permits installation of the crankshaft sprocket by properly positioning its keyway toward the crankshaft pin. After removing the installer rotate the crankshaft to position its alignment mark at the 12 o'clock mark. Before installation of the camshaft sprocket place its alignment mark in the 6 o'clock position so the sprocket teeth meet the Timing Chain without damaging the camshaft retainer. You must avoid hammering when installing. Begin the camshaft sprocket installation when both sprockets display 12 o'clock crankshaft and 6 o'clock camshaft positions. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). The final step involves putting on the engine's front cover.
