Q: How to replace the upper intake manifold on 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: When disconnecting the negative cable from the battery, the upper Intake Manifold can be replaced. Take out vacuum hoses from the Fuel Pressure Regulator, evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve, manifold vacuum source, brake booster, and heater or air conditioning source. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, mass air flow sensor (MAF), intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, idle air control (IAC) valve, throttle position (T/P) sensor, and evap canister purge valve. Drain off the cooling system and remove the air cleaner intake duct. Next, lift out the accelerator control and cruise control cables with the bracket from the Throttle Body, remove the two left side Spark Plug cables from the spark plugs. Remove the camshaft position (CMP) sensor wiring harness and left side Spark Plug wire harness and engine wiring harness from their retainers. Cut the hoses (3,4) connected to the thermostat bypass pipe on the Throttle Body among others which includes; ignition coil bracket complete with the coils; evap canister purge valve; manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor and its bracket, and EGR Valve. Remove the upper Intake Manifold bolts and the stud, then remove the upper Intake Manifold and its gaskets. While changing the upper Intake Manifold, remove the Throttle Body and clean the upper intake gasket mating surfaces. For installation, if the Throttle Body is removed, the first thing you should install it, followed by the upper Intake Manifold gaskets and the upper Intake Manifold. Put in the right upper Intake Manifold bolts and the stud, taking the effort to a round 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Replace the EGR Valve, the MAP Sensor bracket and sensor as well as evap canister purge valve. Mount ignition coil bracket on coils and reconnect thermostat bypass pipe coolant hoses (3,4) to the Throttle Body. Secure the wire harness of the engine, left side Spark Plug wire harness, and camshaft position (CMP) sensor wiring harness to their retainers. Reconnect the left side Spark Plug Wires to the spark plugs then the accelerator control and cruise control cables with the bracket to the Throttle Body and then the air cleaner intake duct. Connect the electrical connectors to the evap canister purge valve, t/p sensor, idle air control (IAC) valve, iat sensor, mass air flow (MAF) sensor, and EGR Valve. Lastly, connect the vacuum hoses to heater and air conditioning source, brake booster, manifold vacuum source, evap canister purge valve and Fuel Pressure Regulator, and attach the negative Battery Cable back and fill the cooling system.
