- Q: How to replace the front transverse leaf spring on 2005 Chevrolet Corvette?A: The procedure starts with vehicle suspension raised above ground and tire and wheel assembly removal. Stand vehicle at height while measuring front spring adjuster bolt gap setting to determine vehicle trim height. Use the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) to install on the transverse spring before using it to apply compression. Use a wrench to detach the stabilizer shaft link from the lower Control Arm and remove lower shock absorber mounting bolts from that same Control Arm. Unscrew the lower ball joint stud nut on the lower Control Arm but keep it in place before using the ball joint separator (J 42188) to remove the ball joint from the Steering Knuckle. Put away the lower ball joint stud nut and suspend the lower control arms with jackstands before taking out the ball joint separator. Make a reference mark on the cam bolts before you remove both the cam bolts and the lower Control Arm. Sealant removal starts with the transverse springs' bolts and retainers which are discarded before extracting the spring completely from the vehicle. To install a new transverse spring use the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) followed by crossmember mounting. Wait to remove the transverse Leaf Spring compressor until after shock absorber installation to prevent damage to the system. Attach newly installed transverse spring retainers with bolts to their position on the crossmember before torquing them to 62 nm (46 ft. Lbs.). After fitting the lower Control Arm to its designated crossmember position install cam bolts following the marking then torque them loosely without final tightening. After installing the lower Control Arm ball joint stud to the Steering Knuckle, apply a new ball joint stud nut until it reaches 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) to anchor the stud properly. Then rotate the nut 210 degrees and verify the minimum spec of 55 nm (41 ft. Lbs.). A jackstand must support the lower Control Arm before you can install the shock absorber lower mounting bolts that need to be tightened to 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.). After attaching the stabilizer shaft link to the lower Control Arm you must tighten the link nut to 72 nm (53 ft. Lbs.). First replace the transverse spring compressor (J 33432-A) before removing the jackstands for tire assembly reinstallation and front trim height adjustment followed by a front wheel alignment process.
