  • Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair the CV Joint Boot for the Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint and Seal Replacement on 2005 Chevrolet Classic?
A: To service and repair the constant velocity joint boot, namely the part that deals with the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement, you will need the following tools: step-nose pliers-3 inch capacities-10 inch (J41807), step-nose pliers-four-point (J41818), and from the snap pliers group -parallel jaw (J8059). Start by first disconnect the small seal retaining clamp in the halfshaft bar using a side cutter dispose, then take down the larger seal retaining clamp from the tripot joint using a side cutter. Carefully remove the halfshaft inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing and move it aside to the halfshaft bar. Take off the housing from tripot joint spider and halfshaft bar, and then use snap ring pliers-parallel jaw (J8059) to spread the spacer ring. Place the spacer ring and tripot joint spider back onto the halfshaft bar and use the same pliers to pull out the spacer ring from the groove. Remove the tripot joint spider assembly by sliding it from the halfshaft bar. The tripot balls, needle rollers, and housing shall be cleaned using a cleaning solvent ensuring they are free from the old grease and contaminants, drying them. Remove the trilobal tripot bushing from the housing, in addition to the spacer ring and seal of the halfshaft bar, while checking on the condition of each component for damage or wear. Installing the small seal retaining clamp to the neck of the halfshaft inboard seal without crimping, move the inboard seal onto the half shaft bar and place it in the seal groove. Crimp the seal retaining clamp using drive axle seal clamp pliers (J35910) to 136 nm (100 ft. Lbs.), get the spacer ring into the second groove, and locate the tripot joint spider assembly toward the spacer ring. Snap ring pliers-parallel jaw (J8059) to be employed to install the spacer ring into the groove of the halfshaft, then, pack grease from the service kit into the inboard seal and repack the housing. Mount the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing ensuring flush, place the larger new clamp on the inboard seal, and slide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. Finally, make sure the halfshaft inboard seal is properly oblong and numbered with the housing and large clamp before closing the seal retaining clamp.
