2005 Chevrolet Cavalier Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the left rear parking brake cable on 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The first step for left rear park brake cable replacement requires release of park brake cable tension along with vehicle elevation and support. Disconnect the left rear end of the cable from the cable equalizer before you detach the park brake cable conduit end fitting from the axle bracket. Start by removing the left rear tire-wheel assembly along with the Brake Drum afterwards. The visible retaining tab on the park brake cable fitting requires a flat-bladed screwdriver to depress it for swiveling the released section of the cable end into the backing plate. The park brake cable requires rotation for exposure of the second retaining tab which the screwdriver can depress to free the cable fitting from its position on the backing plate. After moving most of the cable return spring through the backing plate opening, direct the cable towards the front of the vehicle to remove it from the park brake lever slot. A flat-bladed screwdriver allows you to raise the cable until it is free of the lever so you can remove the cable. When fitting the park brake cable into the backing plate opening position the cable return spring directly behind the spring positioning tab. The install requires pushing the cable forward outside the secondary Brake Shoe until its end reaches the park brake lever slot. Grasp the cable in position before you move its end against the park brake lever and reduce pressure into the slot while drawing the cable forward for secure attachment. A flat-bladed screwdriver placed inside the opening on the lever during cable pull will lock it in position. Moving the cable return spring through the backing plate opening to fix the cable fitting next to the backing plate should include complete retention of the retaining tabs. Return and reposition both the Brake Drum along with the left wheel and tire assembly. The end fitting of the park brake cable conduit should be attached to the axle bracket while applying enough force to establish full contact. Lower the vehicle afterward to complete the restoration of park brake cable system after securing the cable end to the cable equalizer.
