  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the Steering Wheel on 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier?
    A: To replace the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil disable the sir system and make sure the wheels are straight ahead and the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is installed or the ignition switch is in the lock position. Unscrew the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft, remove the tilt lever all at once if applicable, and then unscrew 2 torx(R) head screws for the lower trim cover, as well as 2 torx(R) head screws for the upper trim cover. Remove the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness and remove the retaining ring and take out the air bag clock spring. If changing, dispose of the old air bag clock spring. During installation, recheck the straight ahead position of the wheels and the installation of the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) or the ignition switch is locked position. Make sure the new air bag clock spring assembly is in the center of its position then align it with the horn tower found in the turn signal cancel cam assembly, and slide the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly. Thoroughly mate the retaining ring into the groove of the steering assembly, remove the centering tab on the air bag clock spring and then attach the upper trim using 2 screws of the torx(R) head kind with torques of 1.5 n.m (13 lb in. Etc. Next install the lower trim cover using 2 TORX(R) head screws, ensure that the tabs on both covers click in place, then tighten screws to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). With a tilt column on a vehicle, align and slide the tilt lever handle into the steering column until it locks, then install the Steering Wheel onto the Steering Shaft, and turn on the sir system.
