- Q: How to replace the front (left) CV Joint inner joint and seal on 2005 Cadillac STS?A: The first step for inner joint and seal replacement of the front (left) wheel drive shaft requires removing the entire shaft from the vehicle. A shop towel should be used to encircle the wheel drive shaft bar which can then be attached to a bench vise using its horizontal hold. Cut and throw away the small clamp on the wheel drive shaft bar by using side cutters. The Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J35566) should be used to unlatch the large seal retaining clamp before removing it from the tripot joint. The inboard wheel drive seal should be divided from the trilobal tripot bushing while moving in a linear direction alongside the wheel drive shaft bar. Detach the housing from both the wheel drive shaft bar and tripot joint spider along with the bar itself. The Snap Ring Pliers (J8059) should be used to extract and throw away the previous retaining ring. Before removing the tripot spider from the wheel drive shaft bar note down its current position. The wheel drive shaft bar requires brass drift hammer taps to dislodge the tripot spider face for subsequent removal of joint seal components. Check the wheel drive shaft inboard seal together with tripot joint spider assembly, housing, and trilobal tripot bushing to detect any damage or wear. Put a new small seal clamp on the small end of the inner joint seal before inserting them both into the boot groove of the wheel drive shaft bar. The Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J42572) should be used to crimp the small seal retaining clamp after positioning the inner joint seal small end into the wheel drive shaft bar groove. Apply 1 mm (0.039 inch) gap at the omega ohm shape base while maintaining at least a 2-second clamping hold time. Implement the tripot spider onto the wheel drive shaft bar while embracing the reference mark if you use the same spider and positioning it so the beveled edge aligns with the bar. Insert a new retaining ring to the wheel drive shaft bar with Snap Ring Pliers (J8059) before checking that the tripot spider maintains its proper alignment. The service kit grease distribution should start with filling the wheel drive shaft inboard seal before repacking the housing with excess grease. Place the trilobal tripot bushing inside the housing before placing the larger new seal retaining clamp onto the wheel drive shaft inboard seal. Then guide the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly. The wheel drive shaft inboard seal needs the large diameter to fully cover the trilobal tripot bushing then evaluate the shape of the seal while adjusting when needed. Position the wheel drive shaft inboard seal and large seal retaining clamp along with tripot housing after measuring the seal edge distance at 104.7 mm (4.12 inch). The Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J35566) help to secure the large seal retaining clamp by engaging both latching tangs at their full extent. The inner tripot housing requires 4 or 5 rotations to disperse grease evenly among the spider bearings of the tripot.
