2004 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 3500?
A: Before beginning the Timing Chain and sprocket replacement process start by uninstalling the Oil Pump then turn the Crankshaft to sync its timing marks with the camshaft and Crankshaft sprockets while abstaining from re-spinning the Crankshaft assembly post Timing Chain removal to safeguard against piston assemblies or valve damage. Begin by removing the camshaft sprocket bolts which leads naturally to extracting both the sprocket and Timing Chain. Use three tools: j 8433 two jaw puller (J 8433), j 41816-2 Crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2), and j 41558 Crankshaft sprocket remover (J 41558) to remove the Crankshaft sprocket before removing its key when required. Clean and inspect timing chains along with sprockets if needed. Begin Crankshaft key installation by placing the key inside its keyway then tap it until both ends rest properly. To install the Crankshaft sprocket begin by aligning the sprocket keyway to the Crankshaft key while using the j 41665 Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665) to fully seat the sprocket against the Crankshaft flange. To align both sprockets correctly, position the Crankshaft sprocket's alignment mark at 12 o'clock to ensure the camshaft sprocket locating pin fits into its alignment hole while sprocket teeth and Timing Chain mesh seamlessly together. The installation of the camshaft Timing Chain needs precise alignment between sprockets as the camshaft sprocket alignment mark should rest at the 6 o'clock position. Perform sprocket rotation to align the timing marks before installing the sprocket bolts with a torque setting of 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). Afterward reinstall the Oil Pump.
