2004 Cadillac XLR Differential Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the RH Differential Cover and seal on 2004 Cadillac XLR?
A: To replace Differential carrier cover and seal on right side, given that Differential seales right side, raise and support vehicle firstly. Rear the rh rear tire and wheel assembly, and the rh wheel drive shaft as well as the rh Muffler assembly. Drain the fluid from the box, support the box for the Differential, and remove the right Differential mount. Clean around the Differential Cover of all the dirt or debris, loosen the bolts securing the Differential Cover and push out the dowel pin to remove the cover. Remove the axle seal and o-ring seal from the Differential Cover. Remove bearing race and shims (9, 10) using part bearing and race remover (J 42194) positioning the latter in a hydraulic press. It is important to measure the new and old Differential Cover bore dimensions with a caliper, a straight edge and spacers ( J 42168-16) & record as values a & b , and adjust shim pack accordingly using the difference between the two values. Install the selected shims and the bearing race in the new cover with the help of the bearing and race installer (J 42170) and hydraulic press by pressing them in. Clean the o-ring sealing surface of both the Differential Cover and Differential housing then apply a new seal to the Differential Cover . Mount the Differential Cover onto the Differential, install the dowel pin and bolt down the Differential Cover retaining bolts at 28 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). Use the output shaft seal installer (J 46405) to replace the axle seal to the Differential Cover. Finally, you fill the rear axle down the Differential with the necessary fluids up to the correct level and then the process of reassembly - you now install the rh Muffler assembly, the rh wheel drive shaft, the rh rear tire, and the wheel assembly then lowering the vehicle.
